There are three things to be aware of when determining if your child still fits within our range of Edwards & Co capsules.
- The first thing to consider is your child’s weight.
All Edwards & Co capsules have a weight limit of 13kg. This means that you cannot use an Edwards & Co capsule with a child that weighs more than 13kg. - The position of a child’s shoulders within the capsule also needs to be considered.
Once your child’s shoulders reach the highest slot in the capsule’s backrest, they have reached the maximum height and have outgrown the capsule. This is the case even if they have not reached the weight limit of 13kg. - The final check to make relates to the position of your baby’s head.
There must be a gap of 2.5cm between the top of your baby’s head and the top of the capsule. If your baby’s head is closer to the top of the capsule than 2.5cm, then they have outgrown the capsule. This is the case even if they have not reached the weight limit of 13kg.
When considering all three of these measurements, it’s important to be aware that it is a case of “whichever comes first”. If they have reached any one of these measurements above, this tells you that they have outgrown the capsule.
Age is not a factor we take into account when determining if a child fits a child restraint. To understand this further, please read our FAQ "How long will my baby use the Avery Capsule?"
Often parents assume that their baby has outgrown their capsule once their feet hang over the bottom edge. This is a common assumption but is not correct. The position of a child’s feet is never considered when determining if a child has outgrown their capsule or other rear-facing child restraint. It is recommended that you continue to have your child travel in a rear-facing position for their toddler years and at this age, their legs and feet will extend beyond the end of their child restraint. This is normal and safe. Travelling in a rear-facing position supports your child’s head, neck and spine reducing the risk of severe injuries.
